A penstock is a sluice or gate or intake structure that controls water flow, or an enclosed pipe that delivers water to hydro turbines and sewerage systems. It is a term that has been inherited from the earlier technology of mill ponds and watermills. A penstock has also been described as the pressure conduit between the turbine scrollcase and the first open water upstream from the turbine.

Sluice Gates

A Sluice Gate is used to control the flow or level of a liquid and consists of a sliding door controlled by a mechanically operated spindle, which moves over an aperture in a frame, which in turn is secured onto a structure.

Penstock Manufacturers

Penstocks can be fabricated of many materials, but the strength and flexibility of steel and stainless steel penstocks make it best suited for the range of pressure fluctuations met in turbine operation. Steel and stainless steel penstocks should be constructed in accordance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, VIII, Unfired Pressure Vessels. BEPeterson is National Board certified to ASME Section VIII.

Fabrication of penstocks requires a variety of special machines and equipment, such as rolls, presses, flame-cutting tools, welding machines, testing, radiographic, and handling equipment.
