BEPeterson is a holder of the ASME single certification mark and certificate of authorization. We design and fabricate pressure equipment in accordance with the ASME boiler and pressure vessel code, and handle the entire project process from initial design review to final inspection and data book delivery.
How We Achieve Compliance for ASME Manufacturing
ASME Section VIII defines two primary design approaches. Division 1 applies design-by-rule methods suited to the majority of pressure vessel applications. Division 2 uses alternative design-by-analysis methods for higher-pressure or geometrically complex vessels where more rigorous engineering is warranted.
BEPeterson engineers select the appropriate division based on project requirements and verify compliance through code calculations in Codeware COMPRESS before fabrication begins. We maintain our U and UM stamps through annual audits, and all applicable vessels are registered with the National Board.
Certified Welding and Testing Processes
At BEPeterson, we fully qualify weld procedures before ASME fabrication begins, ensuring your vessel meets code requirements. Our engineers establish welding procedure specifications (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR) and welder performance qualifications (WPQ) to ASME Section IX.
Where code requires postweld heat treatment (PWHT), we perform and document it with full heat traceability. Our experts also verify your vessel’s integrity through a comprehensive NDE program before shipment that entails:
- Radiographic testing (RT)
- Ultrasonic testing (UT)
- Liquid penetrant testing (PT)
- Magnetic particle testing (MT)
- Positive material identification (PMI)
Documentation and Data Books
Our vessels ship with a complete data book including the U-1A manufacturer’s data report, design calculations, certified drawings, material test reports (MTRs) and records of all NDE, hydrostatic testing and PWHT performed. Where required by the installation jurisdiction, we submit the completed U-1A to the National Board for registration, and a copy is included in every data book. Our project engineer compiles and reviews the data book before shipment, providing you with the documents you need to verify compliance and put the vessel into service.

What Is the Difference Between a U-Stamp and a UM-Stamp?
A UM stamp applies to miniature pressure vessels, while the U stamp covers standard pressure vessels under Section VIII Division 1.
When Is a U-Stamp Required?
The ASME U-stamp is required when a pressure vessel must be built to ASME Section VIII codes. This requirement is typically mandated by the jurisdiction where the vessel will be installed, by the end user or by insurance requirements.
Which Design Division Is Right for My Project?
Most applications use Division 1, as it uses established design rules that cover a wide range of standard configurations. Division 2 is suitable when your application involves significantly high pressure, unusual geometry or weight constraints where the additional engineering investment pays off.
