CRN
CRN Compliance and Manufacturing
BEPeterson manages the full CRN compliance process for equipment destined for installation across provinces and territories in Canada. We fabricate vessels that meet ASME construction requirements and CSA B51 Canadian Registration Number (CRN) requirements. Our team also handles provincial registration on your behalf from design submission through nameplate.
CRN and CSA B51 Overview
Governed by CSA B51, CRN requires that a solution design be reviewed and accepted by the relevant provincial authority before it can be legally installed. Once accepted, the authority assigns a unique CRN number to that design, which must appear on the equipment nameplate. CSA B51 builds on the ASME code baseline with additional Canadian requirements for design, materials and documentation. Our engineers prepare and submit the complete design package to the appropriate authority, manage the review process and enable your team to focus on the project.
Provincial Authorities and Registration Strategy
CRN registration is administered separately by each province and territory. Key authorities include ABSA in Alberta, TSSA in Ontario, TSBC in British Columbia, RBQ in Quebec and ACI Central, which serves the Atlantic provinces and northern territories. BEPeterson assesses the right registration scope for each project, whether it’s single-province for fixed installations or national registration for OEM manufacturers supplying the same design across multiple provinces. We handle all filings, correspondence, and fee coordination directly.
Documentation and Testing
Our CRN submission package includes calculations, certified drawings, material specifications, hydrostatic test records and NDE reports, with PWHT records and finite element analysis (FEA) added where vessel geometry or loading conditions require additional verification. We perform radiographic (RT), ultrasonic (UT), liquid penetrant (PT) and magnetic particle (MT) testing throughout the fabrication process, providing a complete, authority-ready documentation set that ships with your equipment.
Capabilities for Diverse Applications
We fabricate CRN-registered equipment for applications ranging from industrial chemical processing to oil and gas production. Dual registration, ASME/National Board and CRN, is available where both are required. Whether you need a jacketed mixing solution for a process application or high-pressure duplex filter equipment for a specialized research facility, BEPeterson is equipped to meet your specifications.
Compliance FAQs
Discover answers to various compliance questions:
Do U-Stamped Vessels Still Need a CRN?
Yes, in most provinces. An ASME U-stamp confirms the vessel was built to ASME code but does not satisfy the provincial registration requirement. Most Canadian jurisdictions require the U-stamp for construction compliance and the CRN to confirm the design has been reviewed and accepted by the provincial authority.
How Long Does CRN Registration Take?
Registration timelines vary by province and by the completeness of submissions. We prepare complete, authority-ready packages to minimize review cycles and keep your project on schedule.
Can One CRN Cover Multiple Design Variants?
A CRN is tied to a specific registered design. Variants that fall within the original design parameters, such as different nozzle configurations or lengths within a defined range, may be covered under the same registration depending on the province. BEPeterson advises on what qualifies as a covered variant and when a new submission is needed.
How Do You Handle Multiprovince Registration?
If your design will be installed or distributed across more than one province, we coordinate national registration rather than managing separate provincial filings in sequence. This approach is especially useful for OEM manufacturers, as it consolidates the process and ensures consistent registration status across all target jurisdictions.
